“Build Your Own Telegraph” May 30, 2-4pm
The Riverton Museum will host this Bailey Tire/Pit Stop Children’s Exploration Series program on May 30th from 2-4pm.
In the 1840s, the telegraph became the first widespread electronic method of communication. For the first time, short messages could be sent quickly over wires from one operator to the another, and delivered on the same day. The telegraph system that eventually became the worldwide standard uses principles of electromagnetism to produce clicking noises on the other end. Samuel Morse developed a code to translate these clicks into letters and symbols.
At this tech-inspired and STEM focused event, we will be learning basic principles of electricity and how to build electromagnets. We’ll put all of that together and build working telegraphs. Lastly, we’ll connect some of our telegraphs together and see if we can send messages to each other from a different room.
Cost is $10 per participant for materials.
