"Bates Battlefield Adventure Trek” July 18 8am

Join the Riverton Museum for a Wind River Visitors Council Adventure Trek to “Bates Battlefield” July 18th.

In July of 1874, General Phillip Sheridan of the U.S. army ordered Captain Alfred E. Bates to raid an Arapaho encampment. Bates group consisted of men of the 2nd Cavalry and several Shoshone men. On July 4th, Bates’ group located the Arapaho encampment in a small valley near the borders of present-day Fremont, Hot Springs, and Washakie Counties, and a battle broke out. In short order, the Arapho had taken refuge in some high cliffs and were firing down. The battle ended with Bates and his men fleeing, and the Arapaho unable to follow, having lost too many horses. Four soldiers and two Shoshone were killed in the conflict. Estimates of Arapaho deaths range between ten and 25.

The site of this battle is still isolated today, and looks much like it did in the 1870s. We’ll be meeting at the Museum to carpool to the site of the battle at 8:00 AM. On the way, we’ll stop at the bunker site of another smaller battle. Be advised that high-clearance vehicles such as SUVs or Crossovers are highly recommended.

$20.00 per person, pre-registration required.
